Part One: The Cornish Pasty
Before heading up yonder- where I will investigate the mysteries of northern food in Sheffield with my fellow postgraduates, I want to introduce you to Cornwall- known for sea, surfing and golden sands- not always it's cuisine.
Pasties are a serious business in Cornwall. Pass by the supermarket travesties - the crimping on top is nothing short of sacrilege. We have a whole range of dedicated pasty shops. When I was walking through my hometown of Penzance there were even more than I would have remembered to count. You have the Mount's Bay Pasty Co., Warrens and Rowe's - with the latter two having a chain across Cornwall - and plenty more.
In recent years the pasty market has changed, with the aptly named "Poshed Up Pasty" available. With no further adieu, I introduce the Cornish Cheddar & Balsamic Red Onion Pasty, from Rowe's.
I'm no vegetarian - but this pasty has a great taste, tangy, crisp and easy to eat on a lazy afternoon in the sun when a full on steak pasty may be too tough to chew.
Oh, just one more thing: Leave the knives and forks at home!Rowe's can be found at 91 Market Jew St, Penzance TR18 2LG & across Cornwall
