Japanese Comfort Food

A few weeks ago, I managed to get the chance to go to Nanban in Brixton. Nanban is owned by Masterchef winner Tim Anderson and describes itself as a Japanese soul food restaurant. On the menu you can find popular Japanese favourites, such as various types of ramen, chicken karaage, and korokke, as well as more unfamiliar choices, such as marinated jackfruit and mentaiko (cod roe) carbonara. Here we have the so called "Miyazaki Ramen", which was absolutely amazing. Chicken in a chicken-soy sauce broth with a tea pickled egg. Had a very strong marmite, umami taste to it, which I absolutely adored!
Here we have some of the chicken karaage, or deep fried chicken, a popular choice in izakayas in Japan. The meat was super tender and had a perfect level of saltiness to it, which I loved. Definitely worth a try-it's a Japanese staple!

Finally, we have one of the more unusual choices on the menu-the fried marinated jackfruit. This was actually my first time ever trying jackfruit and I was definitely impressed. It's got a very firm, meaty texture, but with a sweet, refreshing flavour. At Nanban, the jackfruit is served with the restaurant's secret seasoning, as well as a healthy side portion of honey-miso mayo, which gives it more of a Japanese flavour.
